More women actors are now taking comedy seriously.

Someone once said men find funny women less appealing. While many may agree with this conventional perception, a few don't mind shedding their inhibitions as long as they entertain people. In fact women comedians in India are well on their way to breaking age-old stereotypes surrounding female actors.

Archana Puran Singh, who is one amongst the few managing to do comic and glamorous roles mutually, says it's about being self-confident. "If you are too conscious of your image, you can never be a good comedian. People find me funny in spite of my cleavage revealing roles," she asserts. According to her, puckering your face or putting on a little weight is too much of an image-shock for most female actors. "Women in India are so sceptical of breaking loose from the 'glam doll' image that they are scared of letting people laugh at them," she adds.

Some feel there are different rules for men and women when it comes to slapstick. Actor Tanaaz Lal, who has been doing comedy since more than a decade, says it comes naturally to her. However, she opines that with comedy, women are judged differently. "There is a huge difference between Steve Martin cracking a shady joke and Jennifer Aniston doing it. Women are expected to be evasive, and that in a way restricts them."

Speak of women comics on TV and for obvious reasons one cannot leave out Lola Kutty. "Everyone thinks I am a comic person – I think it's because of my glasses and gajra," says Lola. Despite being popular amongst viewers, Lola states, "I have met funnier men in my life than women. Women are too caught up in the 'beauty is skin deep' rubbish."

Be it Sridevi in 'Chaalbaaz' or Juhi Chawla in 'Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke', some believe that comic timing of women actors previously was far better than it is now. Nevertheless interest amongst heroines to do comedy-driven roles remains. "I enjoy doing comedies as it gives you a break from other genres," ends Bipasha Basu, who will soon be seen in the comedy 'Phir Hera Pheri'.
