Foodie Rashmi Uday Singh bags an international award for her book on veg recipes

Rashmi Uday Singh, one of India’s foremost food writers and authors, has added yet another feather to her illustrious cap. ‘Around the World in 80 Plates’, a gourmet guide to vegetarian cuisine compiled by Singh has won the prestigious Gourmand Award for ‘Best Vegetarian Book in the World’ for 2005.

Founded by Edouard Cointreau in 1995 as the World Cookbook Awards, and considered to be the ‘Oscar’ of food and wine awards, they were renamed as the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in 2001.

Singh says, “This book is a tribute to my 17-year-old gourmet buddy Varedhaman Jain; I’ve put it together for love. It’s quite an honour because it’s the first of its kind. The book spans all continents and has pure, vegetarian recipes that are unique.”

Published by India Book House, Singh’s labour of love has photographs by Sheena Sippy and recipes – starters, main courses and desserts – by chefs of the Oberoi Hotel, Mumbai.

The award ceremony will be held in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, in the third week of May.

“I’m leaving for Kuala Lumpur on the night of May 18 and will stay at The Palace of the Golden Horses. I’m looking forward to meeting the other authors and also the Le Cordon Bleu team,” reveals Singh. For the uninformed, Le Cordon Bleu (French for ‘blue ribbon’) is an international group of cooking schools teaching French cuisine.

Singh sums up, “I’m excited about checking out the restaurants of Kuala Lumpur. 2006 seems to be my year of learning about the world.”
