Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek was about the time in future, and it really was ahead of its time.

The Star Trek universe has space for every race, sexuality, gender, creature, fictional and non-fictional. It had Russians working on Enterprise amid the Cold War and an interracial kiss when the Civil Rights movement in America was at the peak. Roddenberry also promised to feature homosexual crew members on one of the episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

But according to recent revelations made by Star Trek writer David Gerrold, Roddenberry could not keep the last promise he made to fans of the show at a science fiction convention in November 1986. His promise to feature gay characters in the series was not fulfilled because Star Trek was a syndicated show, with air times in the afternoon in some markets. The broadcasters found the idea too controversial, reports Huffington Post.

Gerrold had written two characters in the background of a story for Star Trek: The New Generation. But the episode titled 'Blood and Fire' never aired.

"There were two characters who were not very important to the story, but they were the kind of background characters you need. At one point Riker says to one of them, "How long have you two been together?" That was it. The guy replies, "Since the Academy." That's it. That's all you need to know about their relationship. If you were a kid, you'd think they were just good buddies. If you were an adult, you'd get it. But I turned in the script and that's when the excrement hit the rotating blades of the electric air circulation device," Gerrold told in an interview with startrek.com.

It wasn't in The Next Generation, but Star Trek did feature the first lesbian kiss in Deep Space Nine between Jadzia Dax and the ex-wife of her former symbiont host.
