Meet Shubham Kumar, who secured AIR #1 in the UPSC CSE Main 2020

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released the results of the Civil Services (CSE) Main examination 2020 on Friday evening (September 24). This year the UPSC exam was topped by Shubham Kumar meanwhile Jagrati Awasthi secured the second position and Ankita Jain, the third. 

Shubham Kumar hails from Katihar, a city in Bihar. He completed his schooling at Vidya Vihar Residential School in Bihar. He is also an alumnus of IIT-Bombay, he graduated in B Tech (Civil Engineering). This was not Shubham's first attempt at the Civil Service examination. He had appeared for the same in 2019 and had obtained rank 290. He is the third individual from Bihar to ace the UPSC examination.  

This year, Shubham Kumar qualified for the UPSC 2020 examination with anthropology as his optional subject. The news of Shubham has taken over the internet and people all over Twitter are congratulating him for representing Bihar. Even Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar took to Twitter to thank him for his hard work. 
 

Approximately, 761 candidates have been recommended for appointment based on the written exam and the personality test which was held in August-September 2021. The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2020 was conducted on October 4 last year.

 

For the unversed, the Civil Services Examination is conducted by the UPSC in three stages - Preliminary, Main and lastly the interview. In a statement issued by the UPSC, 10,40,060 candidates applied for the examination, out of whom 4,82,770 appeared for it.
