Delhi: Air quality in Mundka slips to severe category

Central Pollution Control Board carries out inspections across the city during which 554 violations were recorded

In an alarming state of affairs, Mundka area in Delhi becomes the most polluted area on Thursday with an AQI of 404, which falls under the 'severe' category according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) formulation. This is for the first time that any part of Delhi has breached the very poor mark and air has become severe.

The ambient air quality on the city otherwise also remained poor, with the AQI at 291, only few points away plunging to the very poor slot.

On Wednesday, the city's air was 'very poor' at 313 AQI, triggering fear of worse days ahead as farmers in adjoining Punjab and Haryana continue to burn paddy straw, choking the city on heavy dose of pollutants. many areas in the city like Dwarka Sector 8, Anand Vihar,Ashok Vihar showed unprecedented high level of pollution, falling under the 'very poor' category. AQI at Anand Vihar 315, 301 at Anand Vihar, 369 at Dwarka Sector 8, 337 at Jahangirpuri among other places.

Meanwhile, dust from unpaved roads, construction activities and traffic congestion are some of the main local factors causing the air quality of Delhi-NCR to deteriorate as reported by 41 inspection teams deployed to monitor the implementation of norms enforced to combat pollution. According to three reports on the inspections conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board from September 15 to October 7, it was found that a total of 96 inspections were conducted during which 554 violations were recorded.

Of the 554 cases, 41 per cent violations were for open storage of construction and demolition of waste; 14 per cent for open waste dumping; 13 per cent for dust from unpaved roads; 10 per cent for open dumping of construction waste; 7 per cent for traffic congestion; 5 per cent for road dust re-suspension; and 3 per cent for open burning.

The reports list steps taken by the CPCB to deal with the violations recorded. The actions included informing authorities like Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council to impose suitable penalties on the violations.
