Around 1,500 resident doctors from the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have gone on an indefinite strike after one of the doctors was allegedly physically assaulted by a head of a department of the institute. All routine surgeries have been cancelled, academic activity and exams have been postponed indefinitely.

An incident was reported on Wednesday wherein a faculty member had slapped a resident doctor at the AIIMS. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of the hospital then wrote to the director complaining about the HOD and demanded his immediate suspension.

The hospital has constituted a five-member committee chaired by Dean-Research to enquire into the incident. "The committee will submit its report at the earliest. Even after the concerned HOD has apologised to the doctors, the RDA has called the strike, hence paralysing the healthcare system. The hospital has instituted contingency measures to take care of the admitted patients, including those in the ICU and wards," the hospital said in its official statement.
