The debate surrounding India's captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar remained shrouded in secrecy, but former cricketers had made their voices heard when it came to the choice between KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan. A majority of them had thrown their support behind the left-handed sensation, with Gautam Gambhir going so far as to label it a "grave mistake" if Rahul were preferred over Kishan in India's playing XI.

Rahul had always been the preferred choice as the wicketkeeper-batsman for two primary reasons: firstly, he had solidified his claim to the No.5 batting spot with consistent and reliable performances, and secondly, he had left no room for complaint with his work behind the stumps. In fact, Rahul's keeping had lent crucial balance to the Indian ODI side, particularly when Rishabh Pant was sidelined due to injury.

However, winds of change began to sweep through the cricketing landscape after IPL 2023. Ishan Kishan, initially serving as a backup opener, was thrust into the wicketkeeping role when Rahul was sidelined due to a thigh injury. Kishan seized the opportunity with both hands, emerging as the leading run-scorer in the West Indies ODIs, registering a remarkable streak of half-centuries.

But there was a catch - Kishan's outstanding performance came while he batted at his preferred opening position. Rahul remained the first choice for the crucial No.5 spot because India needed someone who could excel there, and Kishan's numbers in that position were less than inspiring. However, fate intervened during the Asia Cup group stage, when Rahul was ruled out. This was the moment Kishan truly made a compelling case for himself.

When India found themselves in dire straits at 66 for 4 against Pakistan, Kishan forged a historic fifth-wicket partnership with Hardik Pandya, rescuing India from the brink of disaster. His brilliant 82-run knock could have easily turned into a well-deserved century had it not been for debilitating cramps. Nonetheless, it left experts and fans convinced that Kishan deserved a place in the lineup ahead of Rahul, who had now regained fitness and was set to rejoin the Asia Cup squad.

Gambhir minced no words in his assessment, declaring on Star Sports, "India will make a monumental blunder if they don't choose Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul”.

Aakash Chopra, another former Indian cricketer, highlighted Kishan's ability to thrive under pressure. Kishan's place in the Indian side had never been secure, yet he consistently delivered when given the chance.
"Ishan Kishan may not get numerous opportunities, but when he does, he faces immense pressure. He even scored a double century, and despite that, we don't see him getting consistent chances, as evident from his absence in the very next series following his double century. The position where Ishan will bat in this team is a separate issue, dependent on various circumstances.

Still, he has grasped the essence of the ODI format," Chopra noted on his YouTube channel.

As the debate raged on, the cricketing world eagerly awaited Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar's final decision, which would undoubtedly shape India's future on the field
