Trade unions, bank employees call 2-day strike

10 central trade unions will launch a two-day nationwide protest on January 8 and 9 to condemn the anti-labour and anti-trade policies promoted by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.

Commuters in Bengaluru might face huge problems on Jnauary 8, 9 as around 10 trade unions called for a two-day strike against the Modi government's policies. Organisations including the AITUC, CITU, HMS, AIUTUC, TUCC, AICCTU, along with employees of banks and insurance companies and BSNL, would participate in the protest.

The strike is likely to affect the KSRTC and BMTC bus services in Bengaluru. Auto drivers and Private taxis have also decided to lend support by staying off the roads to protestfor two days. 

However, Ola and Uber drivers’ associations haven't confirmed their whether they would participate in the protest or not. 

Earlier, a charter of 12-demands was put forth by the unions at the National Convention of Workers held on September 28. 

Meanwhile, a section of PSU bank employees would go on a two-day strike on January 8 and 9 in support of the nation-wide strike call given by 10 central trade unions against the government's alleged anti-worker policy.

The All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and Bank Employees Federation of India have informed the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) of the two-day nationwide strike on January 8-9, 2019, IDBI Bank said in a filing to the BSE.

In a separate filing to the BSE, Bank of Baroda said: "In the event of AlBEA and BEFI proceeding on strike on January 8-9, 2019, the functioning of bank's branches/offices in some of the zones may be affected."

Earlier on December 26, 2018, nine bank unions or close to 1 million employees of various banks, including private lenders, had observed a one-day strike to protest against the proposed amalgamation of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda.
