KOLKATA: Global luxury goods powerhouse Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) is likely to set up a corporate office in India this year as part of monitoring its existing operations and exploring new options.
Currently, LVMH has four small offices, two each in Mumbai and Delhi to oversee its watches and jewellery brands and wines and spirits businesses in the country.
As part of this larger blueprint, the industry buzz is that now LVMH is now looking to bring in Sephora, its branded-perfume retail chain to India. Sephora, along with DFS, the retailer for international travellers, are both part of LVMH’s selective retailing business.
DFS operates not only through airport duty-free areas but also in high-end shopping malls. There are reports that this luxury group is in talks with real estate group DLF for setting up such malls in India, which typically range from 1 to 2.5 lakh sq ft.
However, it is likely that LVMH may not be dependent on DFS for its entry into India, and could stride into the country on its own, within a couple of years, holding the hand of a 49% local partner.
DFS, which is one of the bidders for the duty free retail at Mumbai’s new international airport, had also bid for the Delhi airport but lost out to Alpha Future. Company officials were unavailable for comments.
Industry sources said LVMH is also looking to bring in more Christian Dior boutiques to India as well. Currently only one operates out of Oberoi Delhi but there are projections of 5-6 more. Sources indicated that talks are already on with Taj Mahal hotel and Oberoi Towers in Mumbai and with DLF for space in Delhi’s Emporium mall, currently under construction. Christian Dior boutiques retail fashion accessories, jewellery and leather bags.
