Yesteryear star Nadira is widely considered by many as one of the most successful actresses in Hindi film industry. Nadira, whose real name was Ezekiel, was born into a Baghdadi Jewish family and she has worked in several big films of 1950s and 1960s, including Aan, Shree 420, Pakeezah, Amar Akbar Anthony and Julie. Nadira was given Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Julie. According to reports, Nadira was the highest-paid actress of her time but you would be surprised to know that she was the first Indian actress to own luxurious Rolls-Royce car in Bollywood.

Nadira’s first salary was just Rs 1200, according to several reports and her salary increased to Rs 2500 with the passage of time. Nadira started earning good amount of money after few years due to her brilliant performances. Some reports claimed that Nadira was paid as much as Rs 3600 for films which was a very good amount at that time.

Nadira made her Bollywood debut at the age of 10 in 1943 with Mauj. Nadira became popular after working in the film Aan (1952). In Aan, Nadira played the role of a Rajput princess and her role grabbed everyone’s attention. In 1955, she played the character of a rich socialite in Shree 420.

Nadira was the first actress in Bollywood to buy a Rolls Royce cars and it is said that after Nadira several other A-listers started purchasing the luxurious car. Nadira passed away on February 9, 2006, at the age of 73 in Mumbai. She died at a hospital due to a prolonged illness. Nadira reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and she had other health problems too.
