Last year, it dragged on for 11 days. But the final placements at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) this year were completed in just five days. In fact, IIM-B is the first among all the IIMs in the country to complete the final placements this year.
Slot Zero, the first day of placements, saw 90 students getting placed. This is better than the 64 placements in 2009, but not better than the pre-recession Slot Zero offers of 133 seen in 2008.

Among the companies that made the highest number of offers were Deloitte (10), Boston Consulting Group (9), and McKinsey (9). Over 15 international offers were also made by firms like Temasek, Proctor and Gamble, Enzen and UAE Exchange.
“This year, expectations were high and there was no worry about recruiters not coming to the campus,” said Sabyasachi Senapati, an IIM-B student. “I accepted an offer from McKinsey & Company,” he said.

More companies came to the campus this year than in 2009 — 120 compared to 97. Students favoured the finance sector; there were 65 offers from companies in this sector. This was followed by 54 offers from consulting companies and nine from public sector undertakings.

Ten companies absent from last year’s placements returned to the campus this year. While Nomura made six offers, Bank of America made two.

Most Pre-Placement Offers (summer internships, which students convert into job offers) were from the finance sector (46%), followed by consulting firms (36%). In all, 72 students received PPOs this year.

This year, only 15 new companies visited the campus compared to 39 last year. Narayana Hrudayalaya, which made six offers, and O3 Capital were among them.

The batch of 270 had five differently-abled students. They were also successfully placed; each of the five students had multiple offers, from companies like Wipro, SR Finance and Deloitte, to choose from.

The IIM-B had recently announced plans to partly refund fees of graduates joining non-governmental organisations (NGOs). But no NGO participated in the placement process. “No NGO was invited to the placement process,” an IIM-B student said.
