The Vice-Chancellor of SNDT Women's University, Churchgate, Mumbai, sent out a circular on December 6, 2016 directing students to wear 'decent and formal' clothes. The Vidyarthi Bharti students organisation protested against the notice on Friday, and demanded its withdrawal in five days.

The notice was issued last month to principals, directors, heads of colleges and departments of SNDT Women's University. The notice states that it has been observed by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Shashikala Wanjari that students at the Churchgate campus were attending classes dressed inappropriately. Hence under the instructions of V-C the university heads were requested to strictly maintain a formal dress code on the campus and bring this to the notice of all students from junior till postgraduate degree. Any student found dressed 'indecently' would be punished, according to the notice.

The officials of the Juhu campus claim that the notice has not yet been sent to their campus, and therefore it was not applicable to students studying there. Vijeta Bhonkar, President, Vidyarthi Bharti students organisation, said, "We have never seen such a notice in this University before as everybody knows that students here wear decent clothes to attend lectures. This is not acceptable, and we have full support of the SNDT students because of which we are here to protest."

Smita Salunkhe, Secretary, Vidyarthi Bharti said, "The Vice-Chancellor has the power to revoke that notice but she refused to do it stating that she will set up a committee and take a decision. We received a couple of complaints from students that they have objection to this notice. According to the V-C, a few girls were seen wearing transparent dresses, but that does not mean that the V-C can issue a notice to everybody. Our demand to the V-C is to withdraw this notice, or we will give her an award of being Talibani."

After the protest, students who were protesting were taken away by Azad Maidan police in van. Despite repeated attempts of calls and messages, the V-C remained unavailable for comment.a
