'Ramayan' is India's most watched TV show during lockdown: Report

Apart from 'Ramayana', 'Mahabharat' and 'Shaktimaan' have reportedly doubled YouTube's traffic

'Ramayana' which started airing on Saturday along with 'Mahabharat', 'Circus', 'Byomkesh Bakshi', 'Buniyad', 'Dekh Bhai Dekh' and 'Srimaan Srimati' among others, has already broken records for Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC). A BARC-Nielsen report claims that the epic has become the highest-rating Hindi show since 2015.

According to the report, approximately 5.1 crore viewers came together to watch 'Ramayan' on its first day. The show airs on DD National on two time slots - 9 am to 10 am, and 9 pm to 10 pm.

The number increased by a huge margin on Sunday evening, which is when it recorded the highest numbers. The report states 3.4 crore viewers saw the show on Saturday morning and the numbers only increased during the lockdown period. The show garnered close to 2.87 crore impressions.

“Prasar Bharati has subscribed to the services of M/s Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), India for viewership data of Doordarshan (DD) channels. As per BARC data, viewership of DD National channels increased from 15.81 crore in 2018 to 18.31 crore in 2019, while that of DD Regional channels has increased from 15.78 crore in 2018 to 19.33 crore in 2019,” Information & Broadcasting (I&B) minister Prakash Javadekar said in the Lok Sabha.

Not only on Television, DD National and DD Bharati's viewership surged up even on YouTube. According to reports, 'Ramayan', 'Mahabharat' and 'Shaktimaan' have contributed to the traffic in huge numbers.

The report called Crisis Consumption, recorded that Television was consumed by viewers for 4 hours and 40 minutes daily, which was 11% growth from before the lockdown. Similarly, consumers spent more time on news and video streaming apps under the 21-day lockdown which has been implemented to avoid coronavirus.
