TRENDING NOW

Apple showed off the new iPhone 7 models early this week with some interesting new features. However, these features can only be regarded as “new” or “innovative” to Apple itself. Or probably to its loyal fan following.

Nonetheless, the crowd cheered. This proves that that the Apple fanboys will still happily jump at whatever Apple throws at them. Let’s take a quick look at the new additions to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, all of which which are features in many existing Android devices today.

1. Dual cameras

Apple introduced dual cameras, albeit only in the higher-end iPhone 7 Plus. But, this feature is present in numerous Android devices such as HTC M8, LG G5 and Huawei P9. If you are looking for a phone, specifically with a dual-camera, then are many Android phones in the market which will be available for less than half the price.

Apple also upgraded the front cameras to 7MP, which almost sound like a joke when compared to front imaging systems of the likes of phone from Oppo or Gionee, which have mastered the art of exceptional cameras that offer great results for the selfie brigade.

2. IPX7 water and dust resistant

Apple is finally catching up in building phones that can withstand the elements. The new iPhone 7 models are rated IP67 for water and dust resistance. While these are the first iPhones to ever include these abilities, Sony had it first on the Xperia series, roughly four years ago. Additionally, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S5, in 2014, which also sported these features. Samsung took it a step ahead by offering IP68 on the Galaxy Note7 (exploding battery notwithstanding.)

3. Sans the 3.5mm jack

Probably the most mocked innovation, Apple ditched the 3.5mm jack and decided to use a lighting port to offer better audio. Apple calls this move “courage”. However, this courage has been seen previously on phones like LeEco’s LeEco Le2 and LeMax2 and on the Moto Z. This being done, the company will be, thankfully, bundling a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter with these new phones.

4. Improved stereo speakers

The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will offer audio from the bottom speaker and earpiece speaker as well. The output is claimed to be twice as loud as the iPhone 6s. Originally, HTC started this trend with the HTC One M7. This feature was also followed on in their HTC 10 flagship phone. Apart from HTC, Google has also used this combination for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

5. Better and brighter display

Both iPhone models, sport a DCI-P3 wide color gamut support. Additionally, it has a 25 percent brighter display. An improved display on the iPhone 7 will offer better picture quality while the camera can capture great pictures in DCI-P3 too. However, P3 is the most commonly supported of the wide gamut standards across the industry. It has been seen on the Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 in the past.

Facebook has field day with the launch which spoofs (such as this one) sprouting by the dozen.
