Yogesh Rathod, a Mumbai-based Gujarati has got an US patent that will force blue-chip companies like Twitter, Facebook, Apple, Oracle and others to shell out billions of dollars as royalty to him every year.

The patent No. 7991764 from the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) has been granted for a technology platform called, "Method and system for communication, publishing, searching, sharing and dynamically providing a journal feed." In simpler words, it is a patent for social networking sites such as Twitter and Newsfeeds in Facebook. The patent is for 20 years beginning from 2008.

Everyday millions of people use this platform to share their joy, likes and dislikes in their e-network and stay connected with each other, seamlessly. "Around 25 billion actions are generated only on Facebook every day," says Yogesh Rathod, the inventor.
Rathod belongs to Lathi, a small town in Amreli district of Gujarat. His parents moved to Mumbai years ago and he was born and brought up in the financial capital of India.

Armed with post graduation in commerce and a two-year course from Aptech Computers, Rathod began his quest in 2005 and worked for about a month on the project and invented a method of communication which allows user to connect, communicate with someone who is unknown. "Till now you needed an address, a phone number or an email ID to establish a contact," he said.

"Being a commerce student I always thought of doing a business but software also attracted me," he says while explaining his journey. In July 2005, Rathod filed for the patent in India and in January 2008 I filed for the patent with the USPTO, Europe and Canada. "I got the patent in August 2011 in the US, however, my application for the same is pending in other countries or regions," he said.

He further adds that his patent includes messaging such as in Twitter, News Feeds and privacy setting in the Facebook. "Privacy setting also includes dynamic, summary and profile settings," he further elaborates.

"My thinking is simple. I want to create an operating environment connected with internet which will work on actions of a human and not the machine. I have also invented for a 'Service Based Social Network' and a 'Universal Desktop search'. I have also filed for a patent for the same in the US," says Rathod.

A service-based social network will enable all service providers, however big or small to connect with its user over the net on real time basis. Same way, universal desktop search will allow users to search data, files and information from desktop PCs all over the globe to search, share and download in real time basis.

"Google presently allows you to search only those data which is on internet network or servers of a company. In my search engine you will be able to search and download the data from the PCs. We have a habit of storing thousands of files, data and information of our interest on our PC. Now, with my invention user will be able to search deeply. These two patents are in the examination stage. It will take another year for final approval," he says.

"I have filed for patenting in July 2006 and Twitter launched its services in August 2006. Same way, Facebook launched its services in September 2006. Facebook also got a patent from the USPTO, however, the US Department of Commerce has served the notice to Facebook in October 2011 regarding my patent. At present battle is going on," he said.
