In a blog post, popular micro-blogging website Twitter has announced that its verification policy was going to be revamped and the new policy would be implemented from January 20, 2021.

Twitter had earlier asked for feedback from its users which shaped its new verification policy after announcing that it would change it in early 2021.

On Twitter, an account is verified if it has a blue tick mark next to the Twitter username. The new verification policy, which is shaped by 22,000 responses in a survey conducted by the platform, would tweak the criterion for a profile to be deemed 'complete'.

In its post, the company also said that it would automatically remove the verified badge or tick from accounts that remained inactive or incomplete.

The formal application process though would not start on January 20. The policy would come into effect and the company would start removing badges and making changes.

There was no danger of losing the badge if the users make the required changes as per the new verification requirements before January 20.

Twitter had paused the formal application process for verification after it created confusion more than three years ago.

Some new changes that will now be implemented are more defined categories for getting the verified badges and a lax set of profile information requirements to be eligible for the badge. Twitter would consider new categories for the purpose including government officials, non-profit organisations, and brands, apart from journalists, media companies, and sports accounts.

According to Twitter, it was open to expanding the list of categories with time.

As for the memorial accounts, Twitter said, "We are not planning to automatically remove the verified badge from inactive accounts of people who are no longer living, and are working on building a way to memorialise these accounts in 2021."

Twitter would also bring in new features to differentiate human-run accounts "to make it easier for people to know what’s a bot and what’s not," it said in its blog post.

For those who would like to apply to be verified, Twitter would bring forth a self-serve application process sometime in 2021, allowing them to confirm their identity and select a category to be verified.
