Madhav Dhingra beat Arjun Kochhar 3-2 (9-11 7-11 11-9 11-5 11-3) in the semifinal of the Under-15 category in the Bombay Gymkhana Maharashtra State Open squash tournament on Friday.

The south paw showed great grit and stamina to come back from two games down to clinch the match in the decider.

Dhingra, a student of Dhirubhai Amabani International School, took up the game three years ago. The 14-year-old has achieved a great deal since he began playing squash - he has played in two nationals and represented the country in the Asian Juniors and Milo All Stars, an international squash tournament held in Kuala Lumpur.

The ninth grader has opted for the IGCSE curriculum, which allows the students to select Physical Education as a subject along with the standard academic electives in school.

“A student has to select four sports, which compose of Physical Education,”said Dhingra, who has selected the subject. He added, “It has been a very good supplement to my normal squash routine.”

Dhingra has predictably opted for squash as one of his sport alongwith weight training, hill walking and basketball. He said, “I practice squash for two hours everyday, but that is not enough as one must take care of fitness alongwith practicing the skills of a sport.”

Dhingra further explained that the subject included studying theory of the sport and human anatomy for better performance. “PE is a mixture of sports and biology; we study the human body and how to keep it in shape. Along with strategy we are taught about the muscles and ligaments that need to be strong for that particular sport,” he said.
