Even as deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, also the district’s guardian minister, has called for a meeting on Saturday to find a solution to the water crisis in Pune, officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the irrigation department on Friday refused to budge from their stands.

Since March 1, the city has been witnessing 20% water cut, which has translated into the city receiving 1,150 million litres water per day (MLD), which was earlier 1,250 MLD. Now the irrigation department has been asking the civic administration to bring it down to 900 MLD owing to low water storage in the dams.

“There is no change in the situation or our stand. The PMC will have to suffice with the water quota and it needs to reduce its consumption to 900 MLD,” said AV Surve, superintendent engineer of irrigation department on Friday.

On the other hand, the head of the civic body’s water department, VG Kulkarni, said, “It is very difficult to cut down water intake to 900 MLD. There would be unrest among the citizens with such severe water cuts. At the most, we can bring down the water intake to 1,050 MLD.”

The PMC had earlier objected to the irrigation department’s proposal. Meanwhile, the city is receiving 1,100 MLD and
further cuts were not imposed. Chavan had said that Tuesday was the deadline to see if the water consumption could be brought down to 900 MLD, or else the PMC would resort to one-day water cut from next Thursday.

Saturday’s meeting assumes significance in the light of the present scenario.
