The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has said that it is bringing some changes in the process of making changes to account details like name, father's name, date of birth, etc. to deal with fraudulent withdrawals from PF accounts.

In the past, EPFO has taken several steps to help employees make corrections to their accounts easily. However, after observing that some people change complete names and profiles to withdraw money from their PF accounts, the body has announced that it will bring some changes in the overall process.

The changes have been classified as major and minor and the process to make them will now have to be carried out as per the new guidelines.

As per the new guidelines, a member cannot be allowed to completely change his or her profile in normal course through either online or offline process. Exceptions can be made in extreme situations, where the member's name has to be changed after following due process prescribed in the law or in case of erroneous upload of member data by the employer.

Minor corrections

- The EPFO has said that if the correction is related to expanding the name/surname from abbreviation to full name, or vice versa, without changing the first letter if, after the correction, the pronunciation of the name doesn’t change, will be considered as minor correction.

- If the change involves the change in the surname of female employees after marriage.

- Similarly, if the father name or husband name is inserted as a middle name in AADHAR, it will be counted as a minor correction.

Major corrections

Changes that do not come under 'Minor correction', or a correction leading to complete change in name/father name, or if the correction requires to change more than two fields, it will be considered a major corrections.

To approve the minor and major corrections, the competent authorities are described as follows:

- APFC/RPFC II for minor corrections

- RPFC-I/RPFC-II(OIC) for major corrections

EPFO has also stressed that major corrections shall not be done online without proper documentary proof and verification of the authenticity of the case will be decided by the competent authority.
