The long-standing feud in the Lilavati Hospital Trust family took an ugly turn on Friday. A police complaint was lodged against one of the directors of the hospital.

Niket Mehta, one of the directors, registered a complaint at the Bandra police station against Chetan Mehta, co-director of the hospital, and 20-odd unidentified persons for allegedly assaulting him on Friday morning. The police registered a case of rioting against the accused.

“Niket Mehta has been unfortunately attacked. The hospital trust is in the process of taking appropriate action against the people involved,” a hospital spokesperson said. According to the police, around 11.30am on Friday, Chetan visited his uncle and managing director of the hospital, Vijay Mehta, who was in the first-floor ICU of the hospital.

“Vijay’s son, Niket, did not allow Chetan to meet his father, and allegedly pushed him out of the room. Chetan threatened Niket that he would return with his people,” senior inspector Prakash George of Bandra police station said.

Niket said in his statement to the police that a few minutes later, Chetan came back with some 20 persons and assaulted him. Niket sustained minor injuries on his face and hands. The attackers fled the scene.

Incidentally, on Thursday, Chetan lodged a non-cognisable complaint against Niket, saying that the latter had terminated some top employees of the hospital. Among them were Chetan and his father, Prabodh Mehta (brother of Vijay Mehta). “Chetan, while filing his complaint, had said that Niket had no formal authority to sack them,” George said.
