The residents of Bombay Development Division (BDD) chawls will at last see the actual construction work for redevelopment work of their housse, which will start with ground breaking ceremony within next two weeks.

Minister of state for housing development Ravindra Waikar informed the Maharashtra assembly that the state government would be conducting the foundation laying ceremony or  Bhoomipujan of the much awaited BDD chawl redevelopment project  in two week's time. Replying to the debate on issues of his department, Waikar said that the government has awarded bids for the redevelopment projects, and has chosen Larsen & Toubro to redevelop the BDD chawls at Naigaon, Dadar, and Shapoorji Pallonji Group for the BDD chawls at NM Joshi Marg, Lower Parel.

Waikar said that tenders have been called for Worli BDD chawls and that too will be taken up soon. “We will be giving them 500 sqft houses and the work on the project will begin soon with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurating the project in about two weeks’ time,” said Waikar.

The BDD chawls were developed by the British in the 1920s as a low-cost housing solution for the city. There are 207 such chawls spread across about 37 hectare in four areas – Worli, Sewri, NM Joshi Marg and Naigaon. About 12,327 families live in these 160-sqft houses.

An additional stock of 3,000 houses for sale will be generated from this project , the redevelopment of these chawls will lead to the creation of one of the largest stocks of low-cost housing in the space-starved island city, besides the units required for rehabilitating existing eligible occupants.
