Mumbaikars deciding to drive on city streets on December 31 better ensure that they are sober. For, alarmed by a sharp rise in the number of drivers being booked for drink-driving in December this year, Mumbai Traffic Police has planned an extensive anti drink-driving campaign on the last day of the year.

According to traffic officials, this month till December 29, 2,470 drivers have been booked for taking the wheel in a drunken state while a total of 17,072 drivers have been booked from January to December 29 this year, which is higher than 2014. This also shows that despite so much awareness and drives being carried out by traffic police, motorists still take the wheels in inebriated state.

“The highest number of drunk drivers were booked this December, which is higher than the figures of November when 2,258 people were booked. Hence, it has been decided to take the drink-driving campaign seriously and ensure that surprise checks are carried out throughout the day,” shared the senior traffic official.

The figures provided by the Mumbai Traffic Police show that from December 1 to December 15 a total of 1,602 drivers were booked for drink-driving. “There were days like December 25 when 121 motorists were booked while on December 18 and 19 a total of 111 drivers were booked on each day. In fact, in November this year we have booked 2,258 drivers and in October 1,639 drivers were booked,” shared the official adding that the fine collected till November 2015 from drunk drivers has been Rupees 3,34,27,700.

Meanwhile, cracking on other traffic offenses, the Mumbai traffic police has booked 9,661 drivers for rash driving, 1,747 drivers for speeding, 2,03,046 drivers for jumping signals, 53,028 for lane cutting, 4,75,224 drivers for no parking and 13,579 drivers for speaking over mobile phone while driving.
