The Kothrud police on Saturday arrested the daughter-in-law in the murder of Shobha Laxmikant Selarka (62) at her residence in Sarita Housing Society,

near Lodha petrol pump in Kothrud on March 13.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Dnyaneshwar Phadtare said that Shweta Uday Selarka (27) allegedly murdered Shobha in cold blood after the latter came to know about Shweta’s extramarital affair.

Shweta is accused of hoodwinking the police by making some jewellery disappear from the house and making it look like a robbery-murder case.

Shobha, who lived on the third-floor 1 BHK flat with her husband Laxmikant, sharebroker son Uday, his wife Shweta and their son, was found dead at around 7.45 pm.  Her head was found bashed and a few ornaments were missing. Shweta had claimed that she had left the home at around 7.20 pm to fetch her son from playground and found her mother-in-law dead when she returned home.

However, local residents found no suspicious individual in the area, the police said.

“We found many flaws in the story Shweta was telling us. When the police reached the spot, Shweta was wearing a salwar kameez soaked in blood. Her clothes would not have been so bloodstained had she not been present at the spot at the time of murder,” Phadtare said. The senior police official said that the suspect later confessed to have murdered her mother-in-law.

“The suspect said that when Shobha was planning to go out of the city, she offered to trim and shape up Shobha’s eyebrows. She made Shobha to sit on a chair and bashed the unsuspecting victim’s head with an iron rod twice. She also stabbed Shobha on her neck and face with a knife. We have recovered the iron rod and knife from the bathroom of the flat,” he said.

After killing Shobha, Shweta called her husband, who sent his friend Pankaj Jaipuriya to help her. Till Pankaj reached there, Shweta locked herself in the house. Shweta had left her daughter Jasmin (3) at the Ideal Colony playground. Shobha’s husband Laxmikant too had gone out leaving only the two women at home. The investigations have revealed that Shobha was against the idea of Shweta working as an insurance agent.

“We also suspect that Shobha had come to know about Shweta’s extramarital affair,” Phadtare said.
