Thane commuters who are inconvenienced with errant rickshaw drivers but do not have time to follow-up on a complaint, can do so through Whats app. In a new initiative to make it easier for commuters and tough on the drivers, the Thane traffic police have launched this initiative.

Now you can take a selfie with any rickshaw driver who misbehaves with you or bills you wrongly. And rather than uploading it on your social network account you just have to send it to the Thane traffic police number (7039003866) through Whats app. "This will act as evidence and help us track down the offender without inconveniencing the passenger. It will also help us take action against the errant driver" says DCP Rashmi Karandikar, Thane Traffic police.

Thus, passenger refusal, over-charging and other such acts can land the driver in trouble. All you have to do is take the driver's or the rickshaws number plate picture and send it on the above number. Earlier when a commuter would tell the rickshaw driver that he/she would report him to the cops, the latter would the commuter to go ahead fully knowing that nothing would happen. "But a picture will be deterrent enough for him to not say or do such things," says Karandikar.

After you send the picture and the information to the traffic police, we will take action against the driver. "And if he is a repeat offender then we can even declare him a defaulter and revoke his license with the help of the RTO (regional transport office)," she says.

The idea behind this is to discipline the rickshaw drivers and make people come forward and take action rather than being a passive complainant. Even if people do this for a month, the traffic police is hopeful that it will drive home the point among the drivers. " The drivers should know that they are serving the customer and should not take the liberty to misbehave with them later," says a source on conditions of anonymity from the Thane traffic police.

Moreover, it also deters false complainants who lodge complaints with the police just out of vengeance. "Many times we get complaints from unknown numbers that a rickshaw driver is drunk and driving or have misbehaved.

When we inquire we get to know that it was done purely out of mischief," he says. Thus, by sending complaints through Whats app even such a nuisance can be controlled.
