The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai crime branch arrested a Nigerian national, an alleged kingpin of an international job racket which duped hundreds of aspirants from various states by promising them jobs in the United Kingdom.
According to EOW officials, the accused, arrested from Nallasopara (East) on October 13, has been identified as John Chima alias Peter Buckingham, 36, who has been living in India on a business Visa for the past one year.
Officials said Chima, a Nigerian national would pose as a diplomat from the UK embassy and lure job seekers by posting advertisements of vacancies on a marketing website with lucrative salary. He would then make the victims deposit Visa and travelling fee in a bank account. Once the deposit was made, he would withdraw the money in different cities. Investigators believe that the gang has duped hundreds of people in crores.
"The accused would post ads of jobs in London, UK on marketing websites and would ask prospective victims to send their biodata. To gain victims' trust, the accused would send them job confirmation and appointment letters," said an EOW officer, adding, "He would offer salaries over Rs1 lakh to the victim."
During the investigation, officials unearthed that the bank accounts where the victims were asked to deposit money were opened using documents of some other person obtained by Chima on false pretexts. The phone numbers used were also in the name of slum dwellers who had no idea about the crime.
The police have so far come across three nationalized bank accounts in Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu and Ulhasnagar. The police have seized two passports, a laptop, a mini laptop pen drive and three cell phones from the accused's house.
The police have booked Chima for cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and are looking for his accomplices.
