The teams of both, postgraduate and undergraduate engineering students from Pillai College of Engineering, New Panvel, won gold medal at the eighth Maharashtra State Inter-University Research Convention Avishkar, held at North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon.

The event was held between January 16 and 18. A total 19 universities from Maharashtra participated in the event.

The ‘Individual Championship’ in engineering and technology was also bagged by Pillai students.

Sagar Kulkarni, a student of Master of Engineering (computer engineering) at Pillai Institute of Information Technology (PIIT), developed a morphological analyser for Devanagari script under the guidance of professor Sharvari Govilkar.

“This research will go a long way in the use of computers for information retrieval from handwritten Devanagari script documents,” said Govilkar.

The undergraduate team consisted of Eshani Diwakar, Shringa Sekhar, Ruturaj Swami and Utkarsh Trivedi. The paper was presented by Ruturaj Swami. This team also worked under the guidance of Govilkar and developed morphological approach for segmentation and recognition of scanned handwritten Devanagari documents, which will enable editing of the document in Devanagari script.

The above two research projects together will facilitate the use of computers for editing and information retrieval from the handwritten documents in Indian regional languages such as Hindi and Marathi.

Prior to the state-level competition, there were university-level competitions at each of the 19 universities. The top two projects from each university were sent for the state-level competition.

The university-level inter-collegiate research convention of Mumbai University was held in Mumbai. The research papers were judged by eminent judges based on poster/model presentation and oral presentation.

The PIIT teams were ranked first among the 77 teams in UG category and first and third among 25 teams in PG category.

Principal Dr RIK Moorthy told that keeping in view the new challenges in knowledge and innovation, Pillai College of Engineering has been making a conscious effort to train its students in research activity.

Avishkar– a research convention, was initiated by His Excellency Shri K Sankaranarayanan, governor of Maharashtra and chancellor of the Universities in Maharashtra, to develop research culture and scientific temper among students.

This year, the University of Mumbai has won an ‘Overall Champion’ trophy and four ‘Individual Championship’ trophies out of six genres, namely humanities, commerce, engineering and medicine.
