Reaffirming his political clout in Navi Mumbai, Thane district’s guardian minister and Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) sitting MLA Ganesh Naik clinched victory against the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) alliance candidate Suresh Haware.

Naik also worsted Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) Rajendra Mahale, independent contestant and former Navi Mumbai Congress chief Namdeo Bhagat, along with eight others in the Belapur constituency.

Naik, who has represented the constituency for three terms, garnered 59,685 votes, while renowned city builder-turned-politician Haware stood second. Mahale managed to get 19,569 votes, whereas Namdeo Rama Bhagat, who defied his party and contested as an independent “to bring to an end the dynastic rule of Naik”, got a meagre 14,516 votes.
However, the winning margin of 12,873 may not please Naik much considering he had registered a thumping victory in the last assembly polls in 2004, before delimitation. But the good news for Ganesh Naik is that his younger son Sandeep won the neighbouring Airoli constituency.

The Naiks have become a force to reckon with in Navi Mumbai, considering Sanjeev Naik (Ganesh Naik’s elder son) is already a member of parliament from Thane.
Sandeep Naik got 79,075 votes, while Navi Mumbai Shiv Sena chief and the party’s candidate for the seat, Vijay Chauguley, scored 67,118 votes.

MNS continues to be the bugbear for Chauguley. It caused his downfall in the general elections in 2009 from the Thane Lok Sabha seat.
