Holi is no more a mere festival of colours. Off late many social organisations which are referred to as mandals in the city have started associating them with social causes. Tadwadi Utsav in South Mumbai, will distribute sarees to an old age home following holika dahan a day before the festival.

On the other hand, residents of the BBD Chawl in Worli will use the occasion to spread awareness about the harmful effects of PUBG addiction with has taken over the lives of the youth.

Every year Chirabazar Tadwadi Holikautsav also known as 'Navsala Pavnari Holi' sees a footfall of thousands of devotees who offer sarees and coconuts to holika and hope to get their wishes fulfilled.

"Later, the Mandal will distribute the sarees to an old age home and coconuts will be distributed to devotees as prasad. This year mandal is celebrating its 113 years of holikautsav," said Amit Bhadricha, a member of the mandal.

He further stated, "Celebrations start from the fifth day of the Phalgun month, 10 days before Holi and continues up to Rangapanchami which is observed five days after the festival. We light up a small hom and thus begins the festival. On the tenth day (March 20), a bigger hom is lit up at post-midnight.

Devotees from all over the city come to seek blessing on the tenth day. The hom is kept burning for five days where we perform some rituals before extinguishing the fire. Members of the mandal will also spread social messages through installations."

The mandal at Worli BDD chawls has been popular for tall holikas. This time they have set up a 51-foot tall holika which is smaller than the previous year but big enough to be amongst the tallest in the city.

"The theme this year is PUBG. We are demanding it to be banned owing to the harmful effects of addiction in the youth of the current generation," said Pratik Kale of the mandal.
