Even as the injured in the bridge mishap were receiving medical aid railways and civic authorities along with politicians started an ugly blame game over CSMT bridge ownership. The Railway ministry has clarified that the bridge doesn't come under them but comes under BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction.

The Ministry of Railways, in a statement, said that the bridge was managed by the BMC. "However, we are extending all our support to the victims. Railway doctors and personnel are cooperating with the BMC in the relief and rescue operations."

While Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai claimed the opposite. Desai said that the bridge comes under the Railways and the latter should have taken prudent steps for its maintenance. Sena's local corporator Sujata Sanap squarely blamed the Railways for the collapse saying that its audit was not conducted. Former corporator Ganesh Sanap recalled that he had sent several communications to the Railways demanding audit but it fell on deaf ears.

Congress parliamentary seat nominee from south Mumbai Milind Deora said that it was BMC bridge and not Railways. ''Around six months ago structural audit was done and it was said that bridge is safe and only minor repairs are required. FIR should be lodged under section 302 of IPC against structural auditors and the BMC officers, who appointed them, and the auditors who carried out the audit,''added Deora.

MIM legislator Wasim Pathan took a dig against the Central government saying that it has money for the development of memorials but not for the upkeep and maintenance of bridges. ''The concerned officers should be suspended forthwith,'' he noted.

However, Sena MP from south Mumbai Arvind Sawant downplayed the controversy over jurisdiction of bridge and the completion of structural audit. He clarified that the bridge was managed by the BMC and it was "fixed and revamped" in 2016 . ''Its audit was completed while the proposal for its repair was prepared and BMC was to conduct it,'' said Sawant.

The state education minister Vinod Tawde shared Sawant's view saying that minor repair was to be carried out of the bridge. ''A panel comprising members of Railways and BMC will hold an inquiry to find out the ownership of the bridge,'' said Tawde.

The real reason behind the bridge collapse shall be ascertained only after this blame game subsides and a proper inquiry is initiated.
