Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled in February 2017, all political parties are jumping into the fray of monsoon problems that dog Mumbaikars every year in order to, perhaps, win people's trust on them being capable of solving city's rain issues.

After reports of heavy rainfall and several water-logging incidents and suspension of train services, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday immediately visited the BMC disaster management room along with chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya. The BMC has been primarily blamed for the city's sorry state of affairs that surface every monsoon — from pothole-ridden roads to clogged nullahs.

"Fadnavis is the first CM who, in recent times, visited the disaster management room. This visit has been dubbed as a political one to pressure the Sena ahead of the BMC polls," said a political observer.

The moment Fadnavis's visit concluded, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and his son and Yuva Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray also hurriedly paid a visit. Later, even the Congress and NCP jumped in, blaming the Sena for the poor state the city is in during rains and demanding an inquiry in the nullah-cleaning contract work.

Sources in the BMC said that Fadnavis may announce the inquiry to expose the Sena before the elections. "The inquiry will cut the Sena to size. And, we are planning to go it alone, just like in the state assembly elections, so we can improve our strength as well as tally in the civic elections. Our motto is "shat pratishet BJP (100% BJP)". We are endeavouring to meet the target and unfurl the BJP flag at the BMC in 2017. We will not compromise with this goal at any cost," said senior functionary of the BJP, requesting anonymity.

Political observers said that water-logging and failure of corporation's machinery will be blown up now. "Everything is fair in politics. In fact, it is true that the Sena has ruined the city's beauty. It did not focus on the development of the city and indulged in corruption. The nullah-cleaning is actually a farce to earn money illegally. A huge amount was spent for every nullah but the scene is the same this year too. The Sena is solely responsible (for this state of affairs) and other political parties will try to get maximum benefit ahead of the BMC polls," said one observer.
