Monsoon illnesses reduce, Mumbai in good health

Two citizens died in July due to leptospirosis and dengue in the city's MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) region. As per the Epidemiology Cell of BMC's public health department's data, the number of monsoon illness has reduced in the month of July this year in comparison to last year's July.

In July this year, BMC has reported 351 malaria cases, 62 leptospirosis cases, 21 dengue cases, 894 gastro cases, and 113 H1N1 cases. Last year in July, BMC reported 713 malaria cases, 101 leptospirosis cases, 59 dengue cases, 1093 gastro cases, and 0 H1N1 cases.

Both the deaths were confirmed by the epidemiological death committee. Besides these, two citizens staying outside Mumbai – Danishta Idrees, resident of Mumbra and Sulochana Doiphode and resident of Dombivali have declared death due to H1N1 in city-based hospitals.

A 32-year-old male died on July 20 due to dengue in a private hospital. The patient did not respond to the treatment and was declared dead on July 20. Cause of death was dengue haemorrhagic shock syndrome with organ failure.

While in another case, a 55-year-old female died due to leptospirosis on July 9. She was admitted in the civic-run hospital on July 4 due to fever, body ache, weakness, vomiting and loose motion. While the patient was being treatment by a local doctor for three days, she was later admitted to a civic-run hospital. While the patient was tested positive for leptospirosis, she did not respond to the treatment. Cause of death was a septic shock in leptospirosis with acute respiratory distress syndrome with acute kidney injury.

According to Dr Padmaja Keskar, executive health officer, public health department, said, "Community awareness with IEC regarding the symptoms is organised across the wards." Early diagnosis and complete treatment of diseases are given in all dispensaries and hospitals."
