Finally, after a decade, the Kurla Bus Depot has been inaugurated on Thursday. It will now be used for operations and benefit of the public.

Transport minister Diwakar Raote, who inaugurated the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking's (BEST) depot, appreciated the podium level. "It's a good idea to have facilities and parking area on podiums for optimum utilisation of the available plot area," the minister said. The Kurla bus depot is spread out on an area of 308.2 square metres.

Speaking about the losses made by the undertaking's transport division, Raote said that attempts will be made to check if any financial relief can be given for larger public benefit. Raote also said that on several occasions he has seen air-conditioned buses running with a few passengers. "This area of operations will have to be looked at," the minister noted.

As per the plans, a total of at least 25 routes will be operated from Kurla Bus Depot. They are 37, 306 LTD, 311, 313, 313 Extn, 318, 320, 322, 323, 326, 332, 365, 395, 413, 426, 433, 446, 506 LTD, 517 LTD, 609, 613, 618 Ring, 631, 632 and BKC-2.

The buses in this depot will have better facilities as compared to other BEST depots in Mumbai. This depot in the central suburbs has staff quarters, modern facilities for maintenance like better washing unit, rain water harvesting, sewerage treatment plant, podium parking, water treatment plant and refuelling pumps, etc.

There will also be spacious buildings for administrative and traffic staff.

A section of the depot plot now has a commercial complex facing the arterial LBS Road, which has been constructed to cater to office spaces. BEST earned revenue by giving out a portion of the land.
