The Bhandup police have arrested five people for kidnapping a local businessman and robbing him of his bag that contained Rs8.21 lakh. The incident took place in October last year, following which a case was registered and Bhandup police had launched the investigation.

According to the police, complainant Badriprasad Maurya was returning home and was carrying Rs8.21 lakh after closing a deal at Masjid Bunder. Mauraya got down at Bhandup railway station and was walking towards the LBS Road, when two of the accused cornered him.

"Maurya was beaten up and forcefully dragged into an SUV by the accused. He was threatened and his bag containing the money was snatched, along with his two mobiles," said a police officer. He added, "The accused later took Maurya to Kanjurmarg on the Eastern Express Highway, dumped him there and escaped from the spot."

After taking over the investigation, Bhandup police tracked two of the accused based on technical surveillance. "We got to know the whereabouts of two accused – Abid Khan (24) and Mohammed Khan (30). Their location was traced to Parksite area in Vikhroli, following which a trap was laid," said the police officer.

He added, "After the duo was picked up, they spilled the beans about the crime during the interrogation. They also revealed the location of three other accused, identified as Firoj Shaikh (24), Wasim Sayyed (25) and Adam Sayyad (39). The trio was arrested from Mumbra." The police have also recovered Rs1 lakh in cash from them and are further investigating if they were involved in any other cases.
