Ganesh Chaturthi is quickly approaching, and devotees have already begun their preparations for the Ganesh puja. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 19th, which is considered an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesh, also known as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles and the bestower of blessings upon his devotees.

During this festival, devotees bring an idol of Lord Ganesha into their homes and fervently worship it for ten days. On the final day, they perform the ritual of visharjan, which involves immersing the idol in water.

It is widely believed that the great Maratha leader Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja initiated Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Maharashtra as a means to foster a spirit of nationalism.

Types of Ganesh idols:

Sitting Posture: A sitting Lord Ganesha symbolizes happiness, peace, and prosperity. It is believed to promote positive energy and a tranquil atmosphere.

Reclining Posture: An idol of Lord Ganesha in a reclining or lying posture signifies luxury, comfort, and prosperity. It is recommended for those seeking these attributes in their lives.

Left Side Trunk: Lord Ganesha with his trunk curving to the left radiates serenity, peace, and positivity, emitting a calm energy.

Mouse shape: Lord Ganesha's vehicle is a rat, which signifies the need to overcome our egos and tread the right path in life. It encourages humility, shedding the burden of ego, and focusing on neglected purposes. The mouse also represents material desires and the restless nature of the mind, which persists even after material desires are fulfilled.

Modak shape: Modaks, Lord Ganesha's favorite treat, reflect his joyous personality. Modak translates to "bliss," and it is believed that offering modaks to Lord Ganesha brings happiness to both the deity and the devotee.

Where to place Ganesha's idol?

As for the placement of the Ganesh idol, Vastu experts recommend the west, north, or northeast directions within your home. Placing the idol facing inside the main door is also considered auspicious, with the back of the deity oriented towards the outside of the house.

Which colour Ganesha idol is good for home?

White Idol: A white Ganesha idol or image is ideal for those seeking peace and prosperity in their lives.

Vermilion-Colored Idol: Those desiring personal growth and development should opt for a vermillion-colored Ganesh murti.

What does Lord Ganesha's features represent?

  • His oversized head represents thinking big.
  • His large ears signify attentive listening.
  • Small eyes denote focused vision.
  • A small mouth encourages speaking wisely.
  • His elongated trunk symbolizes strength and stability.
  • The ample belly reflects contentment and happiness despite life's ups and downs.

These symbolisms remind us of the virtues and qualities we can cultivate in our lives through devotion to Lord Ganesha.
