The stories from books of legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett have come alive in Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan. Corbett hunted big cats that turned man-eater in the Kumaon and Terai regions, and though one feline from Pratapgarh has not been designated a man-eater yet, its actions over the past ten days have posed a serious threat to the life of villagers inside the forest. Forest officials believe that the panther has started showing the first signs of turning into a man-eater.

The first victim of the panther’s fury was a ten year old girl sleeping at her home. The tribals sleep outside their huts in these parts and the girl was sleeping on a cot when around 9 pm on 10th October, the feline attacked and grabbed her by the throat. It grabbed the girl and ran towards the forest as her helpless parents and siblings raised an alarm. While the feline was making towards the interiors, it passed a small section between rocks and a tree where the girl’s leg got stuck. The feline then let go of the girl and fled from the spot as the parents of the girl also reached the spot while making loud noises to scare the panther away. “The parents rushed all the way to the nearby village where they informed the Sarpanch who in turn informed us. Before the father could rescue the girl from the site where the panther left, she had died,” AS Gothwal, Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF) informed DNA.

The second incident occurred two days later when a ten-year-old girl was attacked. “The second attack was carried out near the forest check post on the girl who was playing with her siblings. It was around 6.30 pm and people saw the panther attacking the girl. Therefore, they could immediately rush to the girl’s rescue and the panther left the girl. “The forest officials were informed and the girl was carried to the nearby hospital where primary treatment was administered to her. From there, she was rushed to the district headquarters where she is undergoing treatment and is out of danger,” said the DCF.

The third attack occurred on the morning of October 14 when a middle-aged woman was targeted. “The woman was gathering grass around 7.30 am for her livestock when the feline charged at her. However due to presence of men, the feline left her mauled and fled back to the forest. The matter was reported and the woman was provided treatment.
