Pat Cummins had a horror day with the ball during Kolkata Knight Riders’ opening game against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2020 clash at the Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. Cummins conceded 49 runs off three overs and he was the subject of intense trolling by social media following his performance. Kolkata Knight Riders also fell behind in the chase and when Andre Russell was clean bowled by Japsrit Bumrah, the game was sealed for Mumbai Indians.

When Bumrah came to bowl his final over and the 18th of the match, he had incredible figures of 3-0-5-2. However, Cummins decided to launch himself and redeem himself in a spectacular way. The first ball bowled by Bumrah was slightly short and Cummins heaved it to fine leg for a six. That was a sign of more things to come.

After a sharp bouncer which resulted in a dot, Bumrah bowled yet another short ball but Cummins managed to hook it to long leg for his second six. The Australian managed to squeeze a yorker to cover for a couple and the fifth ball was launched over long on for the third six of the over. Bumrah delivered a wide ball and then, his miserable over ended when a low full toss was bashed straight down the ground for the fourth six of the over. Bumrah’s figures now read 4-0-33-2, with the 27-run over spoiling everything.

Elite list

Bumrah’s ability to nail the yorker and bowl the right lengths in the death has often meant batsmen have been unable to hit many boundaries off him. However, Cummins managed that feat and he joined only two other players who had hit four sixes in a match off Bumrah in the IPL.

The first person to do it was JP Duminy during the clash between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley stadium in 2015. The next batsman to achieve this miracle of Bumrah was Dwayne Bravo in the opening game of IPL 2018 that saw Chennai Super Kings win by one wicket at the Wankhede stadium.

Cummins might have endured a terrible time with the ball, but at least he redeemed himself with the bat by hammering Bumrah, not a mean feat.
