MS Dhoni is all set to return to the cricket field after over 400 days. Ever since his last cricket match during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand to his retirement announcement on August 15, the whole world has changed. The IPL 2020 was postponed for six months due to the coronavirus pandemic but finally, the BCCI and the UAE government worked out the logistics to host the tournament. MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings will start the tournament on September 19 against Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians.

However, even before a ball is being bowled, MS Dhoni finds himself in the middle of a big controversy. The Chennai Super Kings skipper is endorsing OPPO, a Chinese mobile company. In a tweet released by OPPO India, it mentioned about the emotional journey of Dhoni which might be released on September 24th. It captioned, “The man we’ve missed on the cricket field, the Captain Extraordinaire MS Dhoni is here to inspire us to fight all hindrances, get back on our feet and #BeTheInfinite with the new #OPPOReno4Pro. Get ready for the release of this emotional ride on 24th September!” It ends with the headline ‘Be the Infinite – Coming soon’.

This has not amused cricket fans and they have lashed out at MS Dhoni’s double standards. Dhoni is a honorary lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army and had actively tweeted when the Indian Air Force acquired the Rafale Jets. Now, people are questioning his credentials as a soldier after this advertisement.

Chinese tensions

Ever since the Galwan valley tensions between India and China, there has been a massive backlash against Chinese companies and their products. The Indian government banned 58 Chinese apps in June and recently, they also banned PUBG, the popular game in India. The backlash against Chinese products forced VIVO, the title sponsor for IPL 2020 to suspend their association for one year. In VIVO’s place, Dream11 will be the title sponsor.

There has been some outrage even against Dream11 due to the presence of the Chinese entity Tencent within the organization. This latest move by MS Dhoni has disappointed fans but the Chennai Super Kings skipper might not even be aware of this development as he prepares for the IPL 2020 opening game against Mumbai Indians.
