Mumbai Indians (MI) cruised to a 48-run win over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the IPL 2020 clash on Thursday (October 1).

Earlier in the day, KXIP skipper KL Rahul won the toss and welcomed Rohit Sharma's MI to bat first.

The Mumbai side got off to an awful start after pacer Sheldon Cottrell dismissed opener Quinton de Kock for a duck in the very first over of the match.

This meant Suryakumar Yadav received an early call up to come and bat. However, in an attempt to take a quick single, Suryakumar and Rohit got into a misunderstanding which left a small window for Mohammed Shami to pick up the ball and produce a classy direct hit to dismiss the MI batsman for just 10 runs, reducing MI to 21/2.

With the team now in need of a propelling innings, skipper Rohit Sharma took on the responsibility and starting raining hell on KXIP bowlers. In the process, he also secured a 40-ball half-century.

However, lightning struck again during the 16th over the match as KL brought in Shami into the attack. Rohit (70), in his attempt to keep going with his hard-hitting, smashed the first delivery of the over down the ground. However, fielder Glenn Maxwell had other ideas as he took an excellent catch on the boundary ropes.

Last match's hero Ishan Kishan (28) did not have the best of outings but the duo of Hardik Pandya (30*) and Kieron Pollard (47*) boosted MI to a total of 191/4.

In chase of a total of 192 runs, openers Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul handed KXIP a perfect start.

The duo managed to hoist a 38-run stand for the first wicket before Rohit Sharma unleashed Jasprit Bumrah, who fond a breakthrough by dismissing Agarwal for 25.

Krunal Pandya cut short Karun Nair's stay at the crease and sent the batsman back to the dressing for a duck. KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran then tried to tie down a partnership but Rahul Chahar dismissed the KXIP skipper with an excellent delivery on 17, reducing Punjab to 60/3.

Pooran and Glenn Maxwell then formed a short partnership where the Windies batsman played some exquisite shots before falling victim to James Pattinson's bowling.

The West Indian made 44 off 27 balls. Maxwell (11), James Neesham (7), Sarfaraz Ahmed (7) and Ravi Bishnoi (0) failed to lay their mark with the bat as KXIP finished the game on 143/8.
