Inaugural issue of She was released by eminent personalities and educationists here on Saturday. Mirwaiz’s wife, though present on the occasion, ducked the flashing cameras and refused to talk. Covered in a black veil, she preferred to stay in another room when the inaugural function started.
For cameras most of the talking was done by the panelists and one of the editors. “I am a social worker and we decided to do something for the society. We thought of floating an NGO but later decided against it. So we decided to come up with She which will focus on issues relating to society,” said Saima Farhad, co-editor of the magazine.
There was another surprise in store when people flipped the pages of the magazine. The magazine covered issues of dating and teenagers which is considered taboo in conservative Kashmir. Written by Zulfiqara Mantoo, the article explores in detail various aspects of dating prevalent in Kashmiri society. “As one student put it, having a boyfriend is in vogue. Those who do not have boyfriends feel left out,” she said.
Mirwaiz’s wife has preferred to write an article on breast cancer amongst younger women. Besides, the magazine has a special column which provides beauty tips to younger women. “Some women have decided to take up issues relating to women folk. Women play a pivotal role in the society and it is great if these women have decided to take up these issues”, said Shahzadi Simon, director of Doordarshan Kendra, Srinagar, who was present on the occasion. “Any effort made by any person to raise the issues of women in Kashmir must be highly appreciated”, added Prof Abdul Wahid, vice-chancellor of Kashmir University.
