Accused Damodar Singh (35) and his  parents were today convicted and sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment by a local court here in connection with the death of his wife due to dowry.
 
The additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM), KC Swain after examining witnesses and studying the post-mortem report and other circumstantial evidence during the trial, has found guilty all three accused-- Damodar Singh, husband of victim, Nidhi Sahi (22) and his parents-- Baldev Singh (70) and Kalabati Singh (60) for torturing Nidhi for dowry.
 
The court has also ordered payment of a fine of Rs Two thousand each or in case of default, an additional two months in jail.
 
According to the prosecution, the main accused Damodar had married Nidhi Sahi of Patada in Bihar on April 26, 2007. However, Nidhi was subject to dowry torture by her husband and parents-in-law demanding a gold chain and a Nokia Mobile
set. Nidhi's parents had gifted Rs one lakh in cash, gold ornaments and other household objects at the time of marriage
and later expressed their inability to meet the extra dowry demand.
 
Nidhi had committed suicide on October 30, 2007 at her in-law's house in Rourkela. Damodar and his parents were earlier arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by  Nidhi's parents.
