The CBI investigation of the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case is likely to be further delayed by a month or two as IPS officer Satish Verma, who was to join probe on Monday, fell down in his bathroom on Friday and fractured his left hipbone. Verma was operated upon at 8 pm on Saturday and advised bed rest by doctors at Sterling Hospital.

Verma was taken to Sterling Hospital on Saturday morning and admitted at 10:20 am. After preliminary treatment, doctors decided to operate on his hip. “His left hipbone has a fracture, making the operation necessary,” Dr Nikhil Lala of Sterling Hospital told DNA on Saturday afternoon. He further said that Verma will have to on bed rest after the operation but, for how long, would be known only after the surgery.

The CBI had sought the IPS officer’s services in the investigation of the Ishrat case. On the order of the Gujarat high court, the state government on Friday relieved Verma for four months to the join the CBI for the Ishrat case probe. He was to join the CBI team on Monday.

Verma has been at loggerheads with the Narendra Modi government because of his rigorous investigation of the Ishrat case as a member of the SIT set up earlier by the Gujarat high court.

Sources said that because of the accident, the accused in the case may be spared interrogation for some days more. “There was every chance of their arrest but now arrests are likely to be delayed for some time,” a source said. As member of Ishrat SIT, Verma had conducted a flawless probe and was the first to tell high court that the probe was fake. He had also told HC that he wanted to be a part of the CBI team to further investigate the case. However, because of his accident, the CBI will have to continue its investigation without him for a few weeks more.
