Upper-caste student beats up Dalit professor in Ambedkar University after fellowship declined

The accused has been arrested by the police.

Tension prevailed in the Babasaheb Dr Bimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) situated in  Lucknow when a research scholar, belonging to upper caste, hurled casteist remarks and thrashed a Dalit Professor in his chamber when his fellowship was declined.

On a complaint by the Dalit Professor, the accused Sanjay Updhyaya has been arrested by the Lucknow Police. Heavy police force has been deployed in the varsity campus to check any fallout of the incident. Faculty members, as well as students, are agitated after a caste angle was added to the incident.

Varsity administration said that Sanjay is pursuing PhD under Prof L.C. Malaiyya in the economics department. He had submitted a research paper for a fellowship which was rejected.

On instigation by a few students and a professor that his paper was rejected as he was not Dalit, agitated Sanjay Updhayaya barged into the chamber of Prof Malaiyya and confronted Prog him. The research scholar got infuriated when Prof Malaiyya asked him to come later.

He started hurling castiest remarks and got hold of his guide’s collar and punched a few blows. Prof Maliayya shouted for help and was rescued by other faculty members and staff. He lodged a complaint about the assault on him to the varsity administration which called the police.

The SSP Lucknow Kaninidhi Naithani rushed a team of police force and arrested the student. A case for hurling casteist remarks, threatening and beating the Professor was lodged against the erring student at the Ashiana Police station. Meanwhile, students and faculty members are divided over the incident which has turned into a caste imbroglio since the accused and the victim belonged to the upper and lower castes.

A group of students and teachers claimed that the Sanjay is good ins studies and was being victimized by the Dalit Professor since he belonged upper caste while another group stood in support of Prof Malaiyya claiming that the research scholar’s paper was not up to the mark and was rejected by the panel.
