United Left wins big in JNUSU elections

Days after ABVP swept clean all other parties in the Delhi University elections, 2018, it suffered a major defeat at the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union Elections (JNUSU 2018), where the United Left won all four central panel posts with a major lead.

N Sai Balaji of the Left Alliance won the president's post with 2,151 votes, with a margin of 1,179 votes. Sai Balaji secured a total of 2,161 votes against Lali Pandey, the ABVP candidate, who managed 982 votes out of the total 5,170 votes. "Will fight against fund cuts and reverse seat cuts," said Balaji.

The other major seats in the JNUSU elections were won by Sarika Choudhary (vice-president) with 2,692 votes against ABVP's Geetasri Bourah who secured 1,012 votes; Amutha Jayadeep (joint secretary) with 2,047 votes against ABVP's Venkat Chaubey, who secured 1,247 votes; and Aejaz Ahmad Rather (general secretary) with 2,423 votes against Ganesh Gurjar from ABVP who got 1,223 polls.

The vote count remained close for 14 hours between 4 am and 6:30 pm on Saturday, after ABVP members protested and broke glass windows in the School of International Studies' building, claiming that they were not informed about the start of the counting process.
