Twelve years after a sex scandal shook Kashmir, a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday convicted five persons, including former Deputy Inspector General of BSF and Deputy Superintendent of Police. Two other accused, including former additional advocate general were acquitted in the case.

Those convicted by the court includes Shabbir Ahmad Laway alias Shabir Kala, Shabir Ahmad Langoo, Masoor Ahmad alias Maqsood, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ashraf Mir, and Deputy Inspector General of BSF KC Padhi. Those acquitted are businessman Mehrajuddin Malik and the then additional advocate general Anil Sethi.

The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence next week on June 4.

The sex scandal was unearthed in February 2006, when Shaheed Gunj police station seized a CD containing pornographic clip of a 15-year-old girl.

On questioning, the minor had named two former ministers and top police and para-military officers, who were allegedly part of the racket. She also named Sabeena, who, she claimed to be the kingpin of the racket. After the uproar, the the then Jammu and Kashmir government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad handed over the case to the CBI.

The CBI arrested several persons, including former ministers Raman Matoo, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, senior IAS officer Mohommad Iqbal Khanday, DIG BSF KC Padhi, two DSPs Mohammad Ashraf Mir and Mohammad Yousuf Mir, former additional advocate general Anil Sethi, and several others.

All of them were given bail by a Chandigarh court after the case was shifted to Punjab by the apex court. Later, Mir, who is now the J&K state Congress president, was acquitted.

"Dear Dad, I had done no wrong. I had been framed/ trapped by our detractors, Love You," Sethi posted, in an emotional message after he was acquitted.

Advocate Rabindra Pandit, counsel for the accused, said they would appeal the case. "The court has convicted five and acquitted two. My clients will challenge the verdict," said Pandit.
