Reacting to the death of Sunanda Pushkar, Shashi Tharoor’s Assistant Private Secretary P.R. Sadasivam on Saturday said Pushkar was not well for quite some time and was undergoing treatment at the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

“For some time, she was ill as she had gone under some medical investigation in the KIMS Hopital. She was supposed to come back on the 20th for further treatment,” said Sadasivam.

“Whenever she was here, she attended a lot of social functions especially related to womens organizations. She had a good rapport with the people here,” he added.

Commenting on relations between the Tharoor couple, “Their relation was very cordial and they were leading a very ideal life. They were a very happily married couple.

Shashi Tharoor’s political advisor Joseph Zacaraiah said, “We all participated in their marriage function, as we all were happy. I remember her as a very warm and lively person. She took an active interest in social activities.”

“She was very interactive and we have very good memories of her. She last came here on the 14th, and she wasn’t very well, she was also hospitalized,” he added.

Meanwhile, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said the autopsy on the body of Pushkar has been started.

Dr. Sudhir Gupta, the head of the AIIMS Autopsy Board, said that a panel of three doctors would be conducting the autopsy.

Dr. Gupta further stated that the autopsy could take a couple of hours to complete, and its findings would be revealed after completion of the procedure.

Dr. Gupta's announcement came as another medical team said that Shashi Tharoor was now stable hours after being admitted for treatment for a cardiac-related complaint.

Media reports had said earlier in the day that Tharoor had been shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to a private ward of the hospital.

Meanwhile, family members of Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar have reportedly arrived at a hospital to oversee her postmortem procedure. Further details are awaited on the two fronts.

Sunanda was found dead at the five-star Leela Hotel in South Delhi on Friday night. Her body was found on a bed in suite 345 of the Leela Hotel.

Her death came within 48 hours of her going public about her husband's alleged affair with a Pakistani journalist, Mehr Tarar, raising suspicions of suicide, although no note has been found.

She was discovered by Shashi Tharoor when he returned to the hotel on Friday evening after Friday's AICC session. The couple are said to have moved out of the minister's official bungalow as it was being painted.

The police have initially suggested it was suicide. But late at night, the officers were more guarded. Police sources said it could be a "natural or unnatural death". They said all angles were being probed: suicide, poisoning and death due to a sudden heart attack.

A forensic team is at the hotel. A magistrate has reportedly conducted a preliminary interrogation of Shashi Tharoor and his private secretary as per media reports.

The case is being probed under Section 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code as the marriage was less than seven years old. Delhi Police will also ask Twitter to give details of direct messages between Sunanda and Tarar.
