With panchayat elections to be conducted by May this year, state election commission (SEC) instructed district administrations to get infrastructure ready till the booth level.

SEC has directed all district administrations to update voters’ list, earmark places where booths would be put up, along with the required infrastructure. Officials also said that on February 6, list regarding reservations of Gram pradhan, deputy-pradhan, Panchayat Samity chairperson and vice chairperson would be released.

Nilanjan Shandilya has been made the new secretary of the SEC, replacing Osman Gani, who had retired on January 31. Prior to this he was the transport secretary.

West Bengal state government had implied that three-tier panchayat polls would be conducted around May this year and accordingly, commissioner of SEC, AK Singh has started preparations for the elections.

By February 19, notices would reach the offices of Gram Panchayat and Panchayat Samity. Hearing on issues arising out of those would be on from January 20 to 26.

SEC has instructed all district administration to get the required infrastructure ready within three months. It was found out that polls would be conducted immediately after the board examinations.

Earlier state government had proposed panchayat polls to be conducted during winter but according to the panchayat rules, unless the tenure of the panchayats of five years is over, it cannot be dissolved.

Soon after the panchayat elections, there would be municipal elections at 13 civic bodies in the state.

Sources said that many leaders at the grassroot level are not happy with the odd and even reservation police of the SEC.
