A pregnant woman, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle with her husband in Tamil Nadu's Trichy district on Wednesday, died after a traffic cop allegedly kicked the two-wheeler while chasing the couple for not wearing helmets.

According to a report by The News Minute, 34-year-old Usha was travelling with her husband, Raja, in Trichy district's Thuvakudi on Wednesday evening when the incident took place.

A police team reportedly asked them to stop as they were not wearing helmets. When they did not stop, a traffic policeman chased them on another bike and after a short distance, kicked their vehicle, reports said.

Raja lost the balance and the couple fell to the ground. Both sustained injuries and were taken to the government hospital in Thuvakudi where Usha was declared dead. She was 3-month pregnant.

The cop, identified as inspector Kamaraj, fled the scene as people started to gather at the accident site.

Soon, protests broke out and senior police officials had to visit the spot and pacify the agitators.

Superintendent of Police P Cephas Kalyan later said the inspector was arrested and remanded.

He also assured that the CCTV would be checked to ascertain the sequence of events.

"She died because of the fall. The police should not have chased this way. We are investigating," a senior police officer was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The woman worked as a teacher for children with special needs.

According to her family, she was traveling to a friend's wedding with her husband. They were stopped by the police as Raja was not wearing helmet. After a brief conversation with husband, Kamaraj walked away, and Raja believed he could then move on. That's when the inspector followed started following them on another bike, and kicked the bike thrice, the family said.

A similar incident of police’s violent behaviour was reported in January when a police sub-inspector allegedly fined, harassed and beat a 21-year-old cab driver. The driver had immolated himself after the incident.

In November last year, a policeman in Kallupalam in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari district was caught on camera while he hit a bike-rider with his lathi for not wearing a helmet and speeding past when asked to stop, injuring the biker.
