By May-end, the tender to commence the construction of Kalanagar flyover in Bandra is likely to be finalised. Only the formality of a formal nod from the Executive Committee, headed by the chief secretary, will take place a couple of months later.

"At the moment, scrutiny of technical bids is underway. We are likely to open financial bids in eight to 10 days. Thereafter, the file will be forwarded to the Executive Committee for final approval," said an official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Once the Executive Committee takes a decision, the work order will be issued to the private firm that has quoted the least amount for the project.

In all, MMRDA has received six tenders, from Supreme Infrastructure, J Kumar, JMC, NCC, Simplex Infrastructure and Relcon. The authority had floated the tenders last December. The maze of flyovers on the Kalanagar Junction will be constructed in a phased manner. Currently, the process for the first phase is underway.

"For the first phase, flyover between Dharavi-end towards Western Express Highway (WEH) will be erected," said an MMRDA official. The estimated cost for this elevated structure is Rs153.70 crore. Construction for the bridge will commence only from October this year, as no work can be carried out during monsoon.

The overall project will have three flyovers with an extension of one of the bridges and creation of a new road with an estimated cost of Rs227 crore. The other components of the project will be implemented under the next phase.

There will be a flyover each to reach the Bandra Worli Sea Link from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and to the business district from the Bandra Worli Sea Link. The total length of these two two-lane flyovers will be 1,888 metres.

The flyover coming from Dharavi and going towards Vakola on WEH will have an arm that will merge the traffic coming from BKC and heading towards Vakola on the WEH. This bridge will be at the second level or above the existing Kalanagar Junction flyover. This will be a three-lane, nearly 2,920 meters long.

Another component of the project will be a 12-feet wide road through the government land, where the Public Works Department (PWD) and Excise Department have their barracks. This road will cater to the traffic coming from Dharavi-end and headed towards Bandra Worli Sea Link or Mahim. PWD office spaces will be relocated to Wadala, whereas the Excise Department office will be moved to a new building at the same site.

On Wednesday, the MMRDA invited bids to appoint a project management consultant for the first phase of Kalanagar Junction Remodelling project.
