Lost exceptional jurist: Leaders, lawyers mourn

He was known to express his views on public issues, with his characteristic eloquence, says President Ram Nath Kovind

Legal luminary Ram Jethmalani breathed his last in the Capital on Sunday. He was 95. His body was cremated later in the evening at the Lodhi Road Crematorium. He is survived by his son, senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani, and a daughter.

As news of the demise of the doyen of the bar trickled in, Prime Minister, President and Vice-President took to Twitter to express their condolences and share their admiration for the various traits of the veteran lawyer and former Union Minister.

Commenting on Jethmalani's demise, PM Modi said that the country had lost an exceptional lawyer. In his comments, PM Modi said, "He was witty, courageous and never shied away from boldly expressing himself on any subject… In the passing away of Shri Ram Jethmalaniji, India has lost an exceptional lawyer and iconic public figure, who made rich contributions both in the Court and Parliament."

President Ram Nath Kovind in his brief tribute said, "He was known to express his views on public issues, with his characteristic eloquence. The nation has lost a distinguished jurist, a person of great erudition and intellect."

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy who is known to keep few friends described Jethmalani as his "friend-turned-foe-turned very good friend," as he wished him farewell. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid his last respects to the veteran lawyer.

Congress leader and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "Ram Jethamalani with whom I shared great camaraderie will be missed. Feisty, ebullient, fearless, outspoken, uncaring of consequences or of societal norms, he had a large heart and a restive temperament."
