In July 2021, almost a year after joining the party, K Annamalai, 39, who studied at IIM Lucknow, left the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 2019 and was promoted to the position of state BJP chief.
It was September 25 when AIADMK made a major decision which made BJP workers praise Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K Annamalai. The crucial decision was taken at a high-level meeting which was chaired by the party's general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami at the AIADMK headquarters, in Chennai.

The All India Anna Dravinda Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK’s) alliance announced that the party is splitting with Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)- led National Democratic Alliance. The relationship between the two parties became soured to a level that AIADMK left the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance on Monday.
Tamil Nadu BJP Leader CT Ravi praised Annamalai and said that ‘Under the leadership of K Annamalai a great work of strengthening the party is being done’.
Rajnikanth formed Rajini Makkal Mandram but backed out in December 2020. A few months later, the DMK ousted the AIADMK, and the BJP only managed to get four seats in the 234-member House.
According to K Annamalai, the leader of the BJP's Tamil Nadu branch believes that the BJP needs to fight it out alone for the party to grow in Tamil Nadu, even if it takes time. He also expressed his determination to overcome all obstacles in order to bring about a "political change."
As the party's leader, he declared that he was prepared to face individuals, and he wished for the cadres to be equal so that they might eventually defeat their opponents and bring about a regime change.
During his "En Mann, En Makkal" (My Land, My People) padayatra, Annamalai addressed party members and declared “We have seen the need for a political change. This is a challenging time. We need to oppose many.”
"If I don't do certain things, then I will lose the trust you have placed on me...We need to face challenges, overcome hurdles, take a stance to oppose some individuals," he added. In order to ensure this, the party should gear up in this direction, Annamalai said.
